Automatic Passenger Counting
The highly advanced R-Com IoT VT Automatic Passenger Counting system uses high resolution video camera to count, record & compare passenger activity on public transportation.
What is Passenger counting?
Using connected sensors and cameras, the number of passengers entering or exiting vehicles or public transport in real time is accurately tracked, helping improve efficiency by providing data for optimising routes, adjusting schedules, and ensuring compliance with capacity limits.
How are Passengers Counted?
- The highly advanced R-Com IoT VT Automatic Passenger Counting system ( VT-APC ) uses high resolution video camera to count, record & compare passenger activity on public transportation.
- Data is transferred to an on board MQTT logger unit where the data is stored and converted to industry standard MQTT format prior to transmission via Wi-Fi / network protocols to a remote Cloud based server.
- Converting the data in real time & in situ in this way facilitates significant data compression in order to maximise the efficient storing and subsequent transmission of data for analysis.
Use Cases
Public Transportation:
Helps transit operators monitor occupancy in real time, optimize routes, adjust schedules, and manage crowding during peak hours, enhancing service efficiency and passenger comfort. It also aids in adjusting service levels based on demand to reduce wait times.
Fleet Management:
Used by bus and shuttle services to track passenger numbers, improving vehicle utilisation and ensuring efficient deployment of resources. This data allows operators to allocate vehicles based on actual demand, reducing operational costs.
Airports and Train Stations:
Tracks passenger flow through terminals, helping with crowd control, improving security, and enhancing the overall traveler experience. This data assists in optimising staffing levels, security checks, and passenger guidance systems.
Compliance and Reporting:
Ensures vehicles do not exceed capacity limits and assists in regulatory compliance by providing accurate ridership data for audits or funding. This helps transit operators meet safety regulations and qualify for government subsidies based on actual passenger data.
Revenue Management:
Helps transit operators correlate ticket sales with actual passenger counts, reducing fare evasion and improving revenue tracking. By identifying discrepancies between reported ridership and actual counts, it supports more accurate financial planning and budgeting.
Key Features
Real-time Data Collection:
Captures the number of passengers boarding and alighting vehicles instantly, allowing operators to make immediate adjustments to services based on current demand.
High Accuracy Sensors:
Uses advanced sensors including infrared, 3D, or video-based technology for precise passenger counting, ensuring reliable data collection even in challenging conditions like crowded or low-light environments.
Ensured GDPR Compliance:
MQTT can be configured with encryption (TLS) and secure authentication to protect data in transit, ensuring compliance with GDPR’s requirements for secure handling of personal data. Additionally, the system can ensure that only authorised users and systems have access to sensitive data, further supporting GDPR compliance.
Integration with Fleet Management Systems:
Can be integrated with existing fleet management and ticketing systems to provide seamless data sharing, improving operational coordination and reducing the need for manual data entry.
Scalability:
Can be deployed across various types of vehicles, from buses and trams to trains and ferries, without requiring major infrastructure changes, making it adaptable to fleets of any size or configuration.
Cloud-Based Reporting:
Provides access to real-time and historical passenger data via cloud platforms, offering detailed insights and analytics, which can be accessed remotely by operators for monitoring and decision-making.
Compliance Monitoring:
Ensures adherence to legal capacity limits, providing automated alerts when thresholds are exceeded, helping operators maintain safety standards and avoid fines or penalties.
Automated Reporting:
Generates customisable reports for operators, aiding in performance reviews, route optimisation, and regulatory audits, saving time and improving accuracy in data management.
benefits
Improves Operational Efficiency:
Allows operators to better allocate resources, optimize routes, and adjust schedules based on actual passenger demand, leading to more efficient service delivery and reduced fuel consumption.
Enhances Passenger Experience:
Reduces overcrowding by providing data that helps operators adjust services in real time to match demand, resulting in more comfortable travel experiences and shorter waiting times for passengers.
Supports Data-Driven Decision Making:
Offers valuable insights for fleet management and transit planning, ensuring smarter and more cost-effective decisions that align with passenger needs and operational goals.
Reduces Operational Costs:
Optimises vehicle usage by identifying under- or over-utilised services, leading to more efficient deployment of vehicles and staff, reducing unnecessary trips and saving on fuel and maintenance.
Ensures Regulatory Compliance:
Automatically tracks capacity limits and generates the necessary data for reporting, ensuring compliance with government or safety regulations, and simplifying the process of adhering to legal standards.
Increases Revenue Accuracy:
Matches ticket sales with actual passenger numbers, reducing fare evasion and improving financial oversight, which ensures accurate revenue tracking and better financial management for transit operators.
Facilitates Long-Term Planning:
Provides data for urban planners and operators to design better transportation networks and improve future services based on real-world usage patterns, helping to meet growing demand and enhance service coverage over time.
