Gateshead Council

Gateshead Council recognised the need for an automatic pedestrian counting system to accurately monitor foot traffic in high streets. The data collected will be essential for evaluating the effectiveness of initiatives aimed at supporting the reopening of these areas and will inform future reviews. This initiative is part of the council’s broader strategy to revitalise high streets and transform them into vibrant community hub.

Aims

The North East of England has been significantly impacted by the economic downturn, leading to numerous high streets facing considerable challenges in remaining viable. Businesses have struggled to attract customers, resulting in empty storefronts and a decline in community vibrancy. In response to these difficulties, Gateshead Council recognised the urgent need for a deeper understanding of consumer behaviour on their high streets. By gathering and analysing data on foot traffic patterns, the council aims to gain valuable insights into how people engage with these urban spaces. This information is crucial for making informed decisions regarding investments, city planning, and revitalisation initiatives.

Benefits

Gateshead council installed eight pedestrian counting sensors in key locations around the city. The data collected by these sensors is helping to give the council valuable insights into how people move through Gateshead. By understanding the frequency, quantity, and direction of pedestrian traffic, the council is able to improve safety and plan future infrastructure projects more effectively.

Additionally, the data collected by the sensors is helping the council to understand occupancy rates in different parts of the city. This information can be used to better determine store locations or optimise foot traffic in existing spaces. Overall, the data collected by the pedestrian counting sensors is helping Gateshead council to make informed decisions about planning and zoning.

Next Steps

When the council first came to us, they were looking for a way to get a better understanding of foot traffic in the city. We provided them with software that helped them to count and analyse the raw data from the sensors. After seeing the benefits of the system, they decided to use similar vehicle software to contribute to their long-term strategy to create a safer environment. Now, they are installing vehicle counters to get a better understanding of how people are travelling in the city. By improving their data collection and analysis, they hope to be able to improve pedestrian travel and make the city a more enjoyable place to live. Thanks to our systems, they now have the tools they need to make this happen.
